Loading materials

We’ve had some more UHV fun together this week, loading the first source materials into the system. This means breaking the vacuum of the MBE system and loading pure pieces of the raw elements that we will use to grow oxide films. We’ve combined the classics with a few surprises,  stay tuned

Cutting chunks of the element Lanthanum so they could fit our crucible

Looking down into a crucible containing pieces of Titanium. We will evaporate this material at >1600C

Looking heads on into an MBE effusion source (and its cooling jacket)

The element Barium in its high-purity form, sealed in a glass tube filled with Argon. This material oxidizes in air within minutes and must be loaded into vacuum quickly
