Every year or so, we all suit up and run comprehensive maintenance on Deborah, our oxide MBE tool/spaceship. Various parts need inspection, scrubbing/etching, replacement, and source materials need to be refilled. Good fun in good company; also a nice workout
- Low temperature effusion source with its heat shield and cooling jacket
- Looking into a low temperature 40cc effusion source
- Fresh pellets of source material loaded into an e-beam source
- Removal of a 10cc W crucible from a single-filament high-temp effusion source
- Setting up the bake
- Starting up the baking of the system
- Inspecting a low temperature source
- Dramatic view of a quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) before replacement
- Aftermath: a bunch of used copper gaskets
